Building a Content Strategy

A content strategy has two main parts, each containing several subsections.

Content structure

Content governance

These items are all collected and managed in a content style or strategy guide, much like the brand style guide covered in Chapter 5. It’s important to keep this document up to date so that anyone creating content can easily follow the most recent guidelines. Let’s break down each of these parts.

Content Structure

Content structure focuses on the details of how to create your content. The subcomponents of content structure provide the blueprints for crafting new content and updating current content in a consistent way so, like your brand, your content is always properly representing your organization. Content structure is divided into six sections:

Content structure Core content strategy

Core message

Core personas, ranked

Voice and tone table

Required content types

Content specific to certain audiences or industries, including jargon, imagery, videos, etc.
